The Orkney museum is an excellent free museum and is run by Orkney Island Council. The museum covers the ancient and recent past of Orkney, from the brochs and standing stones to the events surrounding the World Wars and how it affected the islands. The shop has a good range of books on Orkney.
We enjoyed visiting the Orkney Museum in Kirkwall and you can easily spend several hours exploring the different exhibits about Orkney life.
The museum covers the "recent" history of Orkney such as the Stewart Earls, to that of the Vikings and Picts and people who lived in Skara Brae, 5000 years ago.

The museum also covers the last World Wars in detail and how it affected the Orkney Islands.
