The Orkney coastline is rich in natural diversity, many areas are rocky, covered in shellfish, other areas have beautiful clean sandy beaches. What we love about Orkney is that the beaches are never very busy and you get to enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife that covers the Orkney Islands.
What I found surprising is the amount of wildlife on Orkney and part of the reason for this must be down to the coastal areas and the amount of food available to birds and other wildlife. From walking along a rocky beach you often see mussels and other shellfish, on the sandy beaches their is evidence of razor fish and cockles, all provide a source of food for coastal and wading birds. Of course may just love walking on beautiful sandy beaches, one of our favourite things to do when on holiday.
Sands of Wright on South Ronaldsay, Orkney. There is car parking at this beach. The beach is beautiful and clean and you can easily spend a day lazing about on this beach. St Margaret's Hope is very close for toilets and places to eat.
The beautiful beach at the Churchill Barrier No 4, just take care if wading or swimming at the beach slopes steeply into deep water. The Orkney scuba diving company uses this area to let you try out scuba diving.
