Kirkwall is the main and largest town in Orkney has plenty to see and we would recommend visiting the Orkney Museum in Tankerness House as well as the St Magnus' Cathedral. The Historic Scotland buildings The Bishop's and Earl's Palaces is a must for all visitors to Orkney and Kirkwall.
Kirkwall is a busy ferry port and tourist destination with plenty to do and see. One thing that should be mentioned is that the main street is not pedestrianised and at some points is single way traffic and barely enough room for that, so be careful when walking in Kirkwall as you may get a false sense of security (from car traffic) although most drivers are very careful.
Kirkwall has quaint streets and interesting shops. The people throughout Orkney are very friendly and Kirkwall people will give you a warm welcome. In summer months it does get very busy so plan where you are staying before you come.
The Kirkwall Museum is run by Orkney Island Council and it is an excellent and free resource on the history of Orkney in ancient times and also in the more recent past. It also has a very good book and gift shop.
Bishop Reid's Tower is a 16th century addition to the Bishop's Palace.
The Earl's Palace was built later than the Bishop's Palace, around about 1600. A small charge is made to explore the two buildings and you can go up to various levels on both of the buildings. From the Bishop's Palace you get a superb view over Kirkwall.
